From the 16th to the 19th of March 2022, the Liberia Institute of Certified Public Accountants (LICPA) hosted the 2nd ECOWAS-ABWA joint congress at the Farmington Hotel in Margibi County, Liberia. The event’s theme was “Good Governance and Sustainable Development for Regional Prosperity.” It was an initiative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in association with the Accountancy Bodies in West Africa (ABWA). The event brought together over two hundred and fifty (250) participants from across the fifteen (15) ECOWAS Countries to discuss innovative ways by which the Accountancy profession can be leveraged to achieve accelerated growth and development for countries in the sub-region, and promote a more focused-leadership, open, equitable and inclusive governance, observance of the rule of law, promote people-oriented policies, accountability, and transparency which can be described as critical requirements for economic prosperity.
The event lasted for four days, each day having its own activities. Day one marked the arrival and registration of the delegates. Day two was the opening session. Here, President George Weah gave the keynote address and served as a special guest of honor. There were three plenary sessions held during the second day. The first session focused on “Good Governance, an imperative for sustainable development and regional prosperity”; the second focused on “Terrorism financing, money laundering, and illicit financial flows,” the third and last discussion considered “the role of the accountancy profession in cross-border trade and the imperatives of deepening capital market across West Africa.” Day three marked the continuation of the plenary session with extra two topics being discussed. One highlighted “digital transformation and future of work of the accountancy profession,” while the final session looked at “Corporate Governance and Board Diversity”: Enhancing value creation for stakeholders. The day also marked the closing ceremonies of the entire program, followed by the gala night at the John Gbeazeh Resort in Marshall, Margibi County. Day four marked the Departure of the delegates as well as tours and excursions for some participants who wanted to have a proper glimpse of Liberia.
