Ms. Cassandra H. at OK FM
On Friday, October 15, 2021, the Founder and CEO of the Golden Touch Corporation (GTC), Ms. Cassandra L. Hampton, appeared on a local radio talk show on OK FM called “THE AGENDA.”
The discussion focused on dissecting the business environment in Liberia and explaining the role of the government in improving businesses in Liberia and how the business environment is affected by the government’s current state of the economy.
Dealing with these critical points, Ms. Hampton asserted that the private sector is an engine for economic growth. The government should invest in the same by providing incentives and ensuring that the economy is suitable for doing business. She further stated that creating attraction to the economy or attracting Foreign Direct Investment will entail the GoL to ensure stable electricity as it is one of the key factors to economic growth, security (legal system, security of tenure), good roads, adherence to the rule of law, timely responsiveness which she described as drivers of investments.
She added that government should also ensure security for investment and ensure independent and impartial judicial systems, which she described as essential elements of any good government. She also encouraged young people to look more closely at the private sector by getting involved in small and medium businesses rather than opting for government jobs, adding that government cannot accommodate everybody.
“How does the current investment climate affect the business environment?” This was another question that Madam Hampton addressed. “The current investment climate is poor. No investors are coming into the country to help address unemployment challenges; as a result, the poverty rate keeps increasing, thus making it hard to address economic challenges,” Ms. Hampton added.
She encouraged the government to do more by being responsive and open to investment opportunities, thus having a good attitude towards investment by creating a trustworthy environment where investors can feel safe and protected. She urged the government to be more business-minded rather than seeing itself as just a mere political space occupied by a specific group of people. “Every government must thrive for good leadership. The government should hire government officials based on qualification and competence; this will add value to economic growth and sustenance and the lives of its citizens. We must be able to lead by example and be innovative”. Ms. Hampton further noted.

In conclusion, she added that businesses or the private sector have a significant role in the governance of the economy, and they are the bedrock of any government. The government, in return, should adopt all necessary practices that will help businesses or the private sector grow and help improve the livelihood of its citizens.
